At a local coin show, I had a coin collector approach us and ask if we had an 1878 7 over 8 tail feathers Morgan Dollar . At that moment in time, I did not. I wrote the request down and started looking for a 1878 7 over 8 tail feathers Morgan Dollar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I managed to find a 1878 7 over 8 tail feathers Morgan Dollar. When it arrived I decided to place the 1878 7 over 8 tail feathers Morgan Dollar under the microscope. The lighting was cooperative this fine day, and I was able to take this photo of the 1878 7 over 8 tail feathers Morgan Dollar reverse:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I decided to look at the entire reverse of this 1878 7 over 8 tail feathers Morgan Dollar to see if there was anything else odd about it. Look at the arrow shafts and feathers on the arrows as well:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Re-punched date or a doubled die obverse?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In the photo above, it definitely does NOT look normal, so I had to head over to https:\/\/vamworld.com and see if I could find a match. BUT before I do, I wanted to look over the obverse. This shouldn’t take too long. Or would it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first thing I look at is the date on this 1878 7 over 8 tail feathers Morgan Dollar to see its position and to see if it a re-punched date. I could see something, I wanted clear concise photos that I can use to describe the coin should it be placed in the shopping cart. Here is what I see on the date of this 1878 7 over 8 tail feathers Morgan Dollar :<\/p>\n\n\n

On the date of this 1878 7 over 8 tail feathers Morgan Dollar, notice that the “cookie cutter” style line is near the top of the coin and it does not exhibit a lower, shelf-like look. If you look at the “1” in the date of this 1878 7 over 8 tail feathers Morgan Dollar, to the top right, it is exhibiting a “notch, or where one impression of a “1” is slightly lower than the other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you look closely at the top curve to the left you can see a separation line between the two “1’s” and also on the flag of the one it is evident. The base of the one has a slight line all the way across the digit, but I was not convinced it was from a second impression.<\/p>\n\n\n

The “8’s” show a classic re-punching in certain areas of the number, mainly to the North.<\/p>\n\n\n

The “7” shows notching on the top left, just about in the same manner the “1” has. This helps solidify the probability that this Morgan Dollar could have a re-punched date, or, if doubled on other devices on the front, a doubled die obverse.<\/p>\n\n\n

Widest known doubling on LIBERTY<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

OK, so this 1878 7 over 8 tail feathers Morgan Dollar has doubling in E PLURIBUS UNUM as well. So, I headed to https:\/\/vamworld.com<\/a> to see if I could find myself a match. After some comparison, the best candidate appears to be VAM-38. One additional area to look at would cement the VAM-38 finding if the LIBERTY was doubled as well. Let’s take a look. This photo of LIBERTY was taken with my cellphone camera. That is normally quite a feat, but the spread on LIBERTY is so wide, that it was not that hard to achieve. It looks amazing.<\/p>\n\n\n

Doubling on the denticles<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

A quick look around the rest of the obverse shows denticles, those teethy looking decorations around the rim. Take a look at these:<\/p>\n\n\n
