1964 Lincoln Cent DDR - TES

The 1964 Lincoln Cent DDR – A tour around the coin

This 1964 Lincoln Cent DDR shows some dramatic “cookie cutter style lines” on most of the letters on the reverse. It can be pretty light in respect to the separation of the impressions on this coin, but it really does not get much better than the 1964 Lincoln Cent DDR. Have a look at the “UNI” in UNITED.

The image below of “TED” in UNITED on this 1964 Lincoln Cent DDR shows even more drama with some excellent separation of the impressions. Its VERY important to note that these impressions are at the same height. They are not shelf or step like, nor are they flat.

That cookie cutter line shows where one impression is over the top of the other. Just looking at UNI above, its very difficult to know if the doubling is Clockwise or Counter Clockwise. But, if we look at the “TED” below, it appears to show the some evidence on the top of the coin. The cookie cutter lines are almost centered on the letter and there are portions of the letters jutting out to the East (right).

The letters of “STA” all show dramatic split serifs. It is highly unusual to see this strong of a notching / split serifs. The “spread” or, distance of each impression that was on the working die was pretty significant.

The dramatic separation continues around the letters of UNITED STATES of AMERICA. The strength is still very strong. The last “S” in STATES may offer more of a clue on which direction the doubling occurred. It it appears that the upper most impression is shifted to the West (left). It shows best on the lower part of the last “S” and the lower split serif.

When I was roll searching for this variety, my pick up point – or area to look for this variety was the word OF. It shows up boldly and its a place that I can quickly position the coin to see if the coin contains a bell ringer. The doubling is a bit weaker on the “O” but, it is still relatively strong on the “F”.

The letters of AME are dramatic and strong as well. the split serifs are practically everywhere minus the bottom left area of the “E”. Heck, its even on the bottom middle of the “M” !

To figure out direction the doubling occurred its relatively simple. You can eye ball the letters and focusing on the cookie cutter lines, find an area that shows most of the letter. Not the thin section of the letters, but the almost normal letter. To me, it looks like that is shifted to the left on all of these letters. To me, that has the doubling occurring in a Counter-clockwise direction.

The RICA does not have the impression strength as much as STATES and the “AME” of AMERICA, but it still shows up quite nicely. It appears to be a little more evident on the “I” and “C”. The “I” also shows the top impression leaning to the West (left), as well as the upper most part of the “C”.

And just when I thought the coin was dramatic enough, I happened to glance down to E PLURIBUS UNUM. I chuckled to myself. The problem was the microscope could not capture the entire image of EPU in one single photo. So I decided to take three photos and splice them to create a full photo of the E PLURIBUS UNUM. In the photo below you can see notching/ split serifs on the tops of the letters – on almost all of them. The photo shows up pretty decent. The “E” and the dots are especially doubled. Its a fitting end to attributing a wonderful 1964 Lincoln Cent DDR.

One more photo ! I just want to show how much spread can actually show on such small letters.
